The School brings together eight research doctorate programs referring to a wide range of subjects in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Irrespective of the differences in methods and in specific contexts, the doctoral programs focus attention on some large areas, correlated and somehow intersected, that offer the opportunity for interdisciplinary studies both theoretical and empirical. The first area relates to public institutions (either supranational, domestic, regional and local) and to the political doctrines that such institutions study. The second area regards the law, firstly in its traditional subdivision of private and public law, but also in the tight relationships that nowadays characterize the two fields. The third area is economy, either in terms of economic policies and public finance or in terms of business administration. Last but not least, the forth field or research focuses on contemporary democracies, analyzed in a comparative perspective.

The main objective of the School is to facilitate a coordination among the doctoral programs and, in such a context, to stimulate the opportunity of common academic activities so that the doctoral students can be aware of the complexity and peculiarities of the different scientific expertises. Indeed, such skills will characterize their professional careers (e.g., either as public administrators, lawyers, economists, private managers, historians, political scientists, etc.) and will also allow them to clearly understand the tight relationships that join all disciplines dealing with social, political, economic and legal phenomena studied in their origin, in their present and in their future developments.

Finally, the Research Doctorate School in Economic, Legal, Political and Social Science presently includes the following eight programs: Private Law; Public Law; Business Administration; Economics; Criminal Justice, International Justice and Fundamental Rights; Institutions, Ideas and Political Movements in Contemporary Europe; Institutions, Administrations and Regional Policies; Political Science.
