The Doctorate covers the following research projects:

- Political Institutions and Political Communication: constitutional systems, the workings of institutions and political transitions; political communication;

- Public Policies and the Welfare State: decision-making processes and implementation of public policies; development of, crises in, and prospects for the welfare state;

- Political Participation and Cultures: political participation, pressure groups, party systems, political competition vis-à-vis the electorate;

- General Political Theory.

Objectives

The experience of democracy as a form of government has undergone a considerable geographical expansion and its institutions have become markedly diverse. In particular, the break-up of the Soviet Empire has altered the international system which emerged from the Second World War and opened up new “spaces” for processes of democratisation; processes of political integration between State entities have produced significant changes in the institutional structures of democratic regimes. All this provides new opportunities for empirical research but requires a considerable re-thinking of the models through which we describe and interpret democratic regimes.

In virtue of the wide-ranging, theoretical training it provides, the Ph.D. program in Political Science represents a suitable starting point for further research activities in political studies, either in universities (with a view to pursuing an academic career) or in research centres within non-academic organizations. Furthermore, the program aims to meet a perceived demand in the job market, in particular as regards access to managerial roles in public administration or in private companies, and more generally as regards access to all those occupational areas that require a high level of cultural education, a flexible mind and a familiarity with logical and argumentative reasoning.

This Ph.D. program aims to provide students with a wide-ranging intellectual base, involving – in particular in the first year of study – training that is designed to avoid both a premature specialization and an overly heterogeneous assortment of courses. The essential idea is to give priority, in the first year, to training in the general theory of politics, with a view to providing unified conceptual frameworks within which an informed choice can be made regarding the subject of the doctoral thesis.

International Projects

The Ph.D. Program is supported by research-oriented cooperation with Italian and foreign Institutions and Universities. Moreover, the Ph.D. Program promotes cooperation with foreign Universities with specific agreements for joint supervision of Ph.D. theses.
