The University of Pavia Doctorate College |
Doctorate in Philosophy |
Research Areas The Doctorate covers eight research areas: - History of Ancient Philosophy; - History of Mediaeval Philosophy; - History of Modern and Contemporary Philosophy; - Philosophy of Language; - Logic and Philosophy of Science; - Moral Philosophy; - Political Philosophy; - Aesthetics.
Objectives A Ph.D. on Philosophy is the natural context in which it is possible to carry out highlyqualified research in the field of conceptual analysis and historiographical methods in philosophy. The first objective will be achieved through training pathways designed to promote the adoption, in analytical and critical perspective, of methods and theoretical approaches which make the exploration of epistemological,≠ cognitive, moral, aesthetic and politico-social languages possible. From the historical standpoint, the basic objective will be to acquire methods and theoretical approaches to textual and historical–philological analysis, reconstructing the various forms of thinking and political, institutional and social environments in which they are formed. The goals of the Doctorate also include the provision of training opportunities designed to respond to wider objectives that further Ph.D. students’ preparation for university research. As well as participating in both the Research Doctorate’s specific activities and courses and scientific activities of the Department of Philosophy, all Ph.D. students are required, in the first two years, to attend two courses among the degree courses offered in philosophical sciences and philosophical theories. Ph.D. students must provide a written report agreed with the professor on the subject of each course. A minimum of two to a maximum of four specific “seminar days” for the Doctorate Program are also organised every year. Every Ph.D. student has one or more |
