The University of Pavia Doctorate College

Casella di testo:

Doctorate in Linguistics
School in Humanistic Science

The Doctorate program is developed in consortium with the Universities of Cagliari, Torino, Bergamo, Milano-Bicocca, Bolzano.

Research Areas

The Doctorate covers six research areas:

- Applied Linguistics (second language acquisition, computational linguistics, language teaching);

- Linguistic Typology;

- English Linguistics and Translation Studies;

- Historical Linguistics and Indo-European Studies;

- Semantics and Pragmatics of Texts;

- Sociolinguistics.

Objectives

This Doctorate is designed to train research students and cultural operators in the research areas listed above. The first year is dedicated to the acquisition of updated knowledge concerning fundamental topics and methodologies not strictly linked to the doctoral student’s field of specialization, such as general linguistics, computational linguistics, applied linguistics and language teaching and learning, as well as short monographic courses on more specific subjects. During the second year, individual research is both deepened and broadened, with a stint of at least six months to be spent abroad. The preparation of the doctoral thesis takes up most of the third year, with constant interaction with supervisors.

This Doctorate is thus designed to provide research students with a training explicitly oriented to highly qualified research activities.

Research Projects

Current research within the doctorate program in Linguistics includes:

- cross-linguistic surveys of morpho-syntactic phenomena;

- typologically-oriented analyses of particular phenomena within specific languages or language areas (with special focus on European languages);
