A hundred years ago, photochemistry was on the crest of the wave. At the 7th and 8th IUPAC Symposium (London, 1909; New York, 1912) Paternò and Ciamician presented their photochemical work and indicated photochemistry as one of the key methods for the science of the future. Indeed during the first years of the 20th Century many types of light-induced reactions were recognized thanks to the work by these two scientists and a few other colleagues.
